Shetland Sheep Mainly a white coloured sheep but can vary through grey to brown and black. The woollen industry of the Shetlands was based on the soft fine wool from this sheep. Small in size they have erect, pointed ears and an alert appearance. The rams (males) have two horns but the ewes (female) are usually hornless (polled).
Bagot Goats An extremely rare breed - less than 100 registered females in Britain. Believed to have been brought back from the Crusades by Richard I. It is named after Bagot Park, Staffs, where most of the animals lived until 1976 when they were given to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. These bearded goats have long black and white hair and horns.
African Pigmy Goats These very small goats are named after the African Natives who are small in stature. They can be any colour. All of them have horns.
Golden Guernsey Goats These are small goats with a golden coloured coat. They are a rare breed dating from the middle ages and owe their survival to a woman on Guernsey hiding them from the German army, to protect them from being slaughtered for food.
These are just some of the rare breeds of sheep and goats that we are saving for future generations to learn about. |
