Tamworth One of our most primitive breeds. An attractive orange coloured pig which is ideally suited to for life outdoors because of its ability to live on rough pasture. The breed, which originates from the Midlands, has been exported and is now more important in North America and Australia. These pigs do not suffer from sunburn like white breeds and are noted for producing high quality, lean meat for both bacon and pork.
Gloucester Old Spot This breed comes from the Severn Valley where it was known as the 'Orchard Pig" because it liked to eat the windfall apples - a by product of the cider making industry. It was once suggested that the black splodges on the mainly white breed were really bruises caused when the apples landed on the pigs. |
